Sebastien Grainger - American Names
While you've probably never heard the name Sebastien Grainger, I'm sure that at least some of you have heard of his former band Death From Above 1979. Not a terrible departure from DFA1979, you'll find that the differences are what makes Grainger's solo material far superior. While DFA1979 was made up of only bass, drums, and vocals, Grainger's solo work finds him making use of guitars, synths, handclaps, pianos, and a whole mess of background vocals. Soaring harmonies and Albert Hammond, Jr.-esque riffs drive the 4 songs found on this EP. Don't be misled though, the fact that these tracks are more accessible isn't what makes them superior to DFA1979, it's the fact that they are far more mature and more cohesive songs.

Indiana University South Bend has been given a free speech rating of “red” by FIRE (the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education).[11] This means that the “university has at least one policy that both clearly and substantially restricts freedom of speech.[12]
In spring 2007 Judicial Affairs Officer Charlotte Pfeifer alleged that Robert Francis, a student reporter engaged in “lewd, indecent, or obscene” conduct and in “stalking or hazing”.[13] These allegations arose out of an interview that Mr. Francis conducted with an actress (who at that time was also an instructor at IUSB) who performed in a campus production of The Vagina Monologues.[14] Mr. Francis interviewed the actress/professor, Sara Smits, about issues addressed in her role in the play (the actress/professor performed in a segment of the play called “Hair”). Francis later stated that, “My line of questioning was in regard to the topic of the play. Under other circumstances, the discussion might have seemed inappropriate, but I took my cue from subjects the actress brought up”.[15] FIRE notes that the allegations of stalking and hazing, leveled at Mr. Francis by Ms. Pfeifer are strange.[16] Presumably this is because stalking would require more than a one-off interaction, and the allegation of hazing is irrelevant as Mr. Francis was not attempting to subject the actress/professor to conduct as a “condition of association with a group or organization” so he was not hazing her.[17].
As punishment for these alleged actions, Ms. Pfeifer suggested a number of sanctions for Mr. Francis:[18]: First, Mr. Francis should attend a session where he could hear from members of the V-Club (the campus club that produced and performed the Vagina Monologues) “how his interactions with them made them feel.” During that session Ms. Pfeifer suggested that Ms. Francis would “only listen.” (a point that she highlighted in bold in her letter to him). Following this session, Mr. Francis would have a “processing session” with Dr. Jim Hurst, Director of the Student Counseling Center. He would then have to follow any recommendations made by Dr. Hurst. Mr. Francis would also have been required to view a movie/documentary assigned to him by Ms. Pfeifer and write a “reflection paper” on this for her.
Based on the investigation by Ms. Pfeifer, in May 2007 Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Services Karen White (Ms. Pfeifer's supervisor) concurred that Mr. Francis had engaged in “conduct that is lewd, indecent, or obscene” and that constituted “stalking or hazing”. Ms. White upheld the disciplinary recommendations of Ms. Pfeifer.[19]. FIRE have referred to the sanctions that Ms. Pfeifer proposed and Ms. White later upheld as "a how-to manual for campus thought reform".[20]
Mr. Francis sought the assistance of the Indiana University South Bend Student Government Association and of FIRE. In August 2007, FIRE sent IUSB Chancellor, Una Mae Reck a letter outlining concerns regarding the handling of Mr. Francis’s case. In particular FIRE expressed concerns regarding “the threat to free speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of conscience posed by Indiana University South Bend’s (IUSB’s) recent punishment of student Robert Francis.”[21]
In September 2007, IUSB overturned the sanctions made against Mr. Francis[22] on the basis that the sanctions were improperly imposed “based on speech rather than conduct.”[23]. IUSB however refused to remove evidence of the complaint from Mr. Francis’s student records.
Mr. Francis raised concerns that his free speech rights were violated by members of the V-Club and by Ms. Pfeifer. Specifically, he alleged that members of the V-Club conspired to supress his article in the student newspaper, The Preface, and that Charlotte Pfeifer faciltated the complaint against him and pressured The Preface’s editor to cut the article.[24] IUSB did not at first investigate Mr Francis's complaint, stating that it would not be appropriate to do so while there were outstanding complaints against Mr. Francis. Later, IUSB dismissed Mr. Francis's complaint.[25] The Student Government Association prepared a defense brief outlining various concerns about the way IUSB handled Mr. Francis’s case[26], however IUSB has refused to investigate these concerns.
Ms. Pfeifer, who is also the IUSB Diversity Officer allegedly made comments to Mr. Francis that the Student Government Association believes show bias and a lack of neutrality. Ms. Pfeifer is reported as saying during an interview with Mr. Francis that: “you are not a woman, you cannot say the same things that an oppressed minority can.” Mr. Francis reported that Ms. Pfeifer then did not let him finish what he was saying and spent “10 minutes telling me that I was not her equal, that even off campus in a restaurant, the movies, a grocery store I was not her equal”.[27].
