I'm going to be completely and totally honest. I do NOT understand all of the hype that surrounds Louisville-based My Morning Jacket. Or, at least I didn't until this weekend. I was driving to work and decided that it was high time I gave them another chance and, for the first time, listened to
It Still Moves from start to finish. One word: Brilliant. I get it, I get it, I get it.
In the spirit of bands like Lynard Skynard, but revamped and updated, My Morning Jacket creates epic and catchy "Southern Rock" songs, but still being true to the spirit of the "Indie Movement".
It Still Moves is an album full of guitar solos and changing rhythms, but that doesn't
try to be good or quote un-quote alternative, unlike more recent efforts. Maybe that's why I had such a hard time getting into the band.
Z and especially their newest
Evil Urges left so much to be desired for me and were, what I would consider, less than listenable. But where newer albums fail,
It Still Moves proves that My Morning Jacket has teeth and are incredible songwriters.
