For years, I was unable to understand why anyone in their right mind would listen to The Smiths. Even Morrissey's solo work can be hard to listen to at times. Then about 3 months ago, I found myself reading the book "The Perks of Being a Wallflower", and after about the 13th reference to the track "Asleep", I decided it was time to listen. Unlike anything else that I had ever heard by them, I was impressed. This was what we will call the "planting of the seed." Over the next few weeks, it seems as though the only thing that came from the stereo at my friend Chad's house was The Smiths. Little by little, I was beginning to find songs that were catchy and even good. Finally, I broke down and downloaded their discography. Still, I wouldn't have considered myself a Smiths fan. Then, (500) Days Of Summer came out and my love for The Smiths was solidified with the tracks "Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want" and "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out". Now, I find myself listening to their 1987 album,
The World Won't Listen, more often than not. I just can't get enough.
I understand that there are a few bands that don't have the immediate appeal that others do (i.e. Joy Division, The Pixies), but I would say with certainty that they are the bands that have staying power. Give it a listen, and then give it another, and if it takes a third for you to fall in love, then give them a third.
