Portugal. The Man - The Satanic Satanist

Portugal. The Man was one of those bands that, when they came out, I anticipated maybe one more release from. I expected that like most bands of their kind, they would very quickly fall by the wayside; to think that they were capable of writing an album as impressive as Censored Colors would have been inconceivable to me. Not only did they achieve that, though, but they also managed to exceed the expectations I had for a follow-up with The Satanic Satanist.

The album is experimental in a way that isn't abrasive and somehow manages to maintain listenability. Portugal. The Man is a band that has remained true to who they are and constantly is challenging themselves with each new release.

Alondra Bentley - Ashfield Avenue

I haven't heard much from this young songstress but what I have heard, I like a great deal. Teetering somewhere on the line between Feist and Eisley vocalist Sherri DuPree, Bentley has created a wonderfully delicate, if not wistful album. Do like I did and give this Spanish native a chance.

Regina Spektor - Far

Unfortunately, I have only had chance enough to hear only the first couple of songs on Regina Spektor's newest offering, Far. As per usual with the new album after an immensely successful record, one has to wonder if it will hold up to the expectations set by the previous. Sometimes, the expectations are exceeded; other times disappointment is all that is felt.

In the case of Regina Spektor's Begin To Hope, you have an album that reached not only critical acclaim, but also vast amounts of commercial as well. The album has a life of its own and is incredibly cohesive. Initial reactions to the few tracks I have heard of the new album makes me skeptical that Far will be able to stand up to the quality of Begin To Hope. It's hard to say, and to be honest, it may take a few listens, but I am hopeful that this incredible songwriter has kept herself from falling by the wayside.
